Getting Ready

It’s been over 80 degrees the last two days with more sunny, warm weather in the forecast and it’s only 4 more weeks to PALM.

No more excuses to not ride your bike.

By now you should have had your bike into the shop for a tune-up. Maybe you did it yourself. You should have a number of rides in and are taking advantage of this great weather by riding, at least a little, almost daily. Maybe you’ve completed a longish organized ride like the Metro Grand Spring Tour or the Zoo-de-Mac. If so, you are well on your way to being prepared for PALM.

If not, do yourself a favor and get started. The more you train now, the more you will enjoy yourself on PALM.

For more on preparing for PALM, check out this PALM web page ( if nessesary, copy and paste the link into your browser):

As you ramp up your training, please review my web page on Cycling Safety:

Ken,

That's a great journal. I’d encourage everyone to read it in order to get a flavor of what self contained, self supported, touring can be like. It sounds like a ride my wife and I might enjoy on our tandem.

Did you have to box your bikes for Amtrak and did you load your baggage and bikes yourselves? Unfortunately, my last experience with Amtrak baggage services was not a good one.

If you can do that ride self-contained, you will have little problem completing PALM. There may be more days, but our daily mileages a usually lower (with optional miles most days), and you only have to carry what you need for the day.

Keep a reasonable riding schedule from now until PALM and you will enjoy yourself immensely.

Al, thanks for the comments about my journal. I was teasing about "sufficient preparation" -- I know we'll be ok, especially in the capable hands of the PALM group.

Regarding Amtrak -- we called ahead and found out that the Piedmont service has bike mounts in the baggage car. They clamped the bikes onto the walls of the car and suspended them that way. No additional cost! I'm already planning a second trip within NC using Amtrak, since the first experience with them was so positive.

In my experience, the only people friendly than cyclists, are people from Michigan. Michiganders who are also cyclists...?... This should be a great week.
