Things slowed down application wise in March. OK, things stopped application wise in March. Things changed in April: we processed 252 applications in the first week in April. We've added a few since then and we now have 845 people registered. That's everybody but maybe 20 problems. Everyone should have received their confirmation letters by now. If you haven't, please email us. You could be one of the 20 problems or we could have sent your confirmation to the wrong address somehow. If you email us, we can email your confirmation letter to you directly, bypassing that messy mailing stuff.
I mentioned in January that you had until May 15 to buy meals and bus rides. A lot of you took advantage of this and included notes saying that you will be buying meals later. Last year we had roughly 650 people at each meal. So far the most meals we've sold for any meal has been 620 for breakfast at Otsego. We have yet hit 600 at any dinner. I have a feeling that we are going to be deluged with meal requests. If you intend to buy meals, NOW is the time. PALM doesn't make any money on the meals: whatever we collect we give to the people making the meals. (It's a fund raising opportunity for local groups.) After May 15 we give each site the number of breakfasts and dinners to prepare. It's in their financial interest to prepare exactly that many meals. Even if they make a little extra, we are talking about bikers here. They make locusts look like anorexics. Don't expect to buy meals at the site. If you want the meals, buy them now. Here's a link to this year's application. You can use it to order meals and/or bus rides. You don't have to fill it out completely, eg sign the waiver again. Your name would be nice. Please include a stamped self addressed envelope. I am so tired of addressing envelopes.

Hot Weather Training
After last weekend I think I'm ready to ride in the summer. I got to ride three times when the temperature was in the 80's. I learned to sweat and I emptied two large water bottles while riding 25 miles. I still can't sit on a bicycle seat but I can stay hydrated. The other thing I am ready for is wind. I don't think I've done a ride yet where I didn't have to buck a 20 MPH headwind. And last week I caught in the rain on my bike. I got one 30 mile ride in which is good since the Metro Grand is this Sunday and I want to ride 45 miles. I should be a tired puppy come Sunday afternoon even without wind.
Just a reminder: if you have registered for PALM and want to add meals and/or bus rides, you have only until May 15 to do so. If you want to add/change meals and/or bus rides, download an application from the website, fill in your name and address (and your rider number if you can find it), the meals and/or bus rides you want, mail it to the PALM address (PALM; PO Box 7161; Ann Arbor, MI 48107) with a check for the correct amount and a stamped self addressed envelope. You don't have to sign the waiver or pick a t shirt size or include an emergency contact or anything else. We have a May 15 deadline because we have to let the bus company and the sites know the number of people well in advance. There are more people taking the bus on June 20 to the start than ever before. We are going to have 6 buses, over 280 riders. It's going to look like a wagon train.

Training for PALM: April
While the weather for the first half of April was horrible for biking, gardening, and baseball, there can be few complaints about the last half. For one thing, all the rain happened during the work week and all the sun was on the weekends. I was able to ramp up by biking. I'm riding with the frequency I want (typically 3 times a week) but not the distance. At least I can sit on a bike seat for significant periods of time. And Judy had the first flat of the season (at the end of a ride, a mile from home) so we've gotten that out of the way. Last weekend we went with Kevin to see "Gone With The Wind" on Friday and then rode 37 miles with him on Saturday. Both took about four hours with intermissions and both left us pretty tired. This weekend is the Metro Grand ride in SW Michigan. We will be trying to go 50 miles for the first time this year. It will be in the 60's and there will be pancakes.
I want to remind those of you registered for PALM that you can add/drop meals and bus rides until June 1 and there is no penalty. Carson City, Millington, and Almont are small towns and it may be difficult to get food there. Consider getting the meals for at least these cities. In reality the meals on PALM are community events. They are the times when you can see everyone who is on the ride and talk to them. Consider getting some meals just for that.
Currently we have 4 buses going from St. Clair to Spring Lake on June 23 at the beginning of the ride. The buses hold 56 people and we have 224 people signed up. There will be some cancellations, but there currently is very limited seating (that is, no seating: 4 times 56 = 224) on the June 23 buses from St. Clair to Spring Lake.
